Calcium for Teeth Grinding and Health

Calcium deficiency might be one of the causes of teeth grinding. Calcium plays an important role in maintenance of good health.

Here is one of my articles on calcium benefits for health:

Calcium - How it Benefits the Body

Calcium is one of the most crucial minerals needed for the normal growth and functioning of our bodies. It is especially required to maintain strong teeth and bones. Hair, nails, sweat, skin, urine and feces - all of them take calcium out of the body. The used up calcium has to be replaced by regular intake of calcium and if the body doesn't get the required amount from the external sources it turns to the internal storage of the calcium, i.e. the bones.

Since the bone loss accelerates soon after the menopause, women are more vulnerable to osteoporosis than men. Osteoporosis is a condition that results in the thinning of bones.

As per the guidelines issued by the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (USA) in Dietary Reference Intakes Research Synthesis: Workshop Summary daily calcium intake for men and women of different age groups is as given below:

Age Group Recommended Intake

Women and men aged between 9 and 18 years - 1,300 mg

Women and men aged between 19 and 50 years - 1,000 mg

Women and men 51 and over - 1,200 mg

To help with its absorption, calcium should be taken with the vitamin D. Other minerals that work with calcium to strengthen the bones are magnesium and boron.

How calcium benefits the body:

* Regular intake of calcium makes the teeth stronger and helps avoid dental problems.

* It helps to keep the blood pressure under control. The hormone calcitriol that is released in response to calcium shortage acts on the smooth muscle walls of the arteries constricting them and elevating the blood pressure.

* Calcium aids in muscle contractions and hence enables the heart and the blood
vessels to perform their functions effectively.

* Regular intake of calcium helps keep the weight off. Research suggests that a person with a calcium deficiency in the diet is more likely to be overweight.

* Calcium also protects against colon cancer. Adequate calcium intake in the regular diet can reduce the overall risk of colon cancer and stop the growth of polyps that can lead to cancer.

Some food sources of calcium are Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, almond, brewer's yeast, parsley, pumpkin seeds and cooked dried beans.

Make sure you include calcium in your diet while you are on a natural teeth grinding help program for the best results.
